An Inspector Calls free essay sample
Further illustrations of Birlings haracter are in his eager remarks to Gerald, we may look forward to the time when Crofts and Birlings are working together for lower costs and higher prices. We can see his greed and parsimony; this is supposed to be a relaxed, Joyous celebration, yet Birling must talk business on an occasion like this. It is clear that his desire for wealth cannot be restrained, even when he is supposed to be at ease. Later, we find proof of his avarice: he refused to raise the wages of capable employees despite being well-off. Priestley, being a Socialist, is concerned for the ill- paid lower classes. Birling shows an injustice in refusing to reward Eva Smith, a good worker. In fact, he can afford to raise her salary, which she deserved as she increased productivity, and hence, his earnings. Yet he is obstinate in his selfishness. Priestley wishes to show how shallow, money-grubbing and stingy capitalists can be; many things are to their advantage, as they held power and dominance over their social inferiors. We will write a custom essay sample on An Inspector Calls or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page If their employees go on strike, they are dismissed, as eva Smith was. There was little protection for workers then. Money is a destructive force an Priestley demonstrates his disdain for its risky influence. Its evil influence is portrayed in Birling, the puppet, as it obstructs our finer feelings. We ought to compensate those who work industriously towards higher profits, and give employees a right to live better lives and more equally. Responsibility hovers around the play. As an employer, wages and to provide them with a suitable workplace. [yet, we see that he refused to increase the renumeration of capable workers. It is his responsibility to provide them so that that can enjoy a life of sufficient needs. Indignant, his employees started a strike, and Eva Smith, who spoke out understandably for her rights, was dismissed. A young woman in her position had little to live on, and Birling who already behaved graspingly, ought to have re-employed her, to provide her with a job. In another perspective, this solution would have fulfilled his other responsibility to the consumers. Being capable, Eva Smith and the other ringleaders would have increased productivity, quality of the products and profits. With these girls, Birling could have offered better products to his consumers. After her dismissal, Eva was forced to resort to finding another Job, but her earlier dismissal led to a concatenation of disastrous events, torment and ultimately, her death. When the Inspector confronts Birling with this information, Birling cold-heartedly refuses to accept any responsibility for her death as it would be very awkward. Eva was helping Birling to make profits; in other words, she shared responsibility. Priestley indicates that we should share our responsibility fairly. Birling ought to have allowed Eva more freedom for her diligence, and taken her under his wing. It is his responsibility to pay her benefits. Capitalists should be willing to accept responsibility. To ignore their workers needs would be inhumane. Capitalists gain rofits from their employees efforts and drudgery, and should therefore ensure a comfortable living for them. More so, as Birling did not provide benefits, he is even more accountable for Evas sufferings. Priestley shows that the rich make the poor suffer, yet give them an unequal share and refuse to be held accountable for their inhumane actions. Another implication lies in Birlings role as the autocratic father. He is narrow-minded and prejudiced against the lower-classes, the young and revolution. The revelation of Birlings hand in Evas demise arouses Eric, why shouldnt they try for higher wages? We try for the highest possible prices. Birling instead becomes angry with him and this shows his hypocrisy. He aims to charge higher prices, but disallows his workers from following suit. Sheila voices her sympathy for Eva, but Birling disdains this. He evidently does not believe in the young voicing their opinions. This play is not merely about the pinions of Socialists, but also the ideas of the young. It is the young who bring new ideas, but due to their unestablished position in the world, the old hold them in contempt. A Radical, Priestley points this out. The old cannot change sufficiently quickly for new reforms. They fear this change, and impose their haughty stands on the youngsters. Eric and Sheila express their views that labourers have the right to try for higher wagers, Birling puts is foot down. The young are less hardened, but they are exposed to new ideas, and can do better for the labourers. They consider possibilities; Birling retorts that there isnt a chance of war. He is trying to avoid the possibilities of his ruin. It is ironical that he mentions, Look at the progress were making. For further progress, the ideals and the efforts of the young are required. With Birlings preconceived otions, society cannot progress to a fairer state. How can we hope for revolution with the young suppressed? Birlings bigotry is depicted in his male chauvinism. He treats females with less respect, and with contempt. He views them as mere toys. The has committed an indiscretion by seducing Eva and betraying Sheila, and Sheila resents this. Birling, however, states that you must understand that a lot of young men - have libidinous flings. It does not anger him. He feels that it is all right in men to philander, but he does not respect Sheilas resentment of Geralds indiscretion, and forces her to marry him. That portrays that he does not respect her rightful opinion. He has little admiration for womanly strength, insisting that there isnt the slightest reason why my daughter should be dragged into this unpleasant business. To him, women are weak, and ought not to know about violence and strumpery. Girls at that time were expected to be innocent. Priestley feels that women should be given the right to know unpleasant and disturbing things and express their opinions. As a large component of the workforce, women are exposed to drudgery, knowledge and the ways of the world; they ought to have the right to defend themselves and give opinions. After the war, many men were killed. And women became more significant in the workforce. Should not capable women be free to speak? Being ignorant increases their vulnerability, and girls like Eva Smith do not have the protection of a male figure. There is a suggestiveness conveyed by Priestley. Birling, as we know, is against Socialism. He does not believe in the possibility of war. Just because the Kaiser makes a speech or two, or a few German officers begin talking nonsense there isnt a chance of war The worlds developing so fat Look at the progress were making well have aeroplanes that will be able to go anywhere . youll be living in a world thatll have forgotten all these Capital versus Labour agitations and all these silly little war scares. Naturally, the First World War took place after this, in 1914, and the progress in technology aided it. The downtrodden revolted and fought for more equality, despite the fact that rich Capitalists pooh- poohed this notion. It is as though Priestley is telling the reader that although the capitalists believed otherwise, war occurred, and Socialism triumphed. The war caused more equality. Therefore, Priestley suggest, socialism, being an excellent deal, gained victory, hence it is like a battle between good and evil. Priestley is cynical about monetary success under Capitalism. He feels contempt for Capitalists like Birling, who disdain Labour, and expressed this scorn by making Birling a hateable, despicable person. The truth is beautiful. Birling strives to conceal Erics affair with Eva, in order to preserve his reputation. Why should we deny the facts? Birling, besides, disapproves of his daughters knowledge about his covetousness and Geralds indiscretion. Priestley detests pretension that comes with social stability. That way, we can administer Justice and determine our responsibilities. Capitalists are supposed to be law abiding; they do not permit strikes. Yet the truth is veiled. Therefore, it is evident that Priestley conveys his revolutionary opinions and attitudes toward society through this play, through subtle means. The characters serve as his puppet-like orators, but with an enthralling plot, influence the reader to think, reflect and analyse the differences between then and now. There are many opinions expressed in this drama, and we can discern Priestleys wrath and contempt in Arthur Birling. Marks: 12/12

The Cat in the Rain Essay Example
The Cat in the Rain Paper A. E. Hemingway ââ¬Å"Cat in the Rainâ⬠Text Interpretation We tend to think of marital life as of a wonderful time, when two soul mates live happily, worshiping each other. However, having a family and seeming happy, one can be misunderstood and feel lonely. And this is the theme of Ernest Hemingwayââ¬â¢s story ââ¬Å"Cat in the rainâ⬠. The story is about a young American couple, who spend their time in Italy. The reader knows nothing about the coupleââ¬â¢s past, and even the American wifeââ¬â¢s name is unknown, which is a part of the authorââ¬â¢s intention: Hemingway generalizes on the problem of marital life, and builds up a typical image of a wife, unhappy in her marriage. The story begins with the description of a hotel where the American wife and her husband stay. This descriptive paragraph occupies a strong position of the beginning. Everything seems to be ideal with the characters: a cozy room on the second floor, a lovely view from the window, but the authorââ¬â¢s description of rain evokes a mood of sadness. We will write a custom essay sample on The Cat in the Rain specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on The Cat in the Rain specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on The Cat in the Rain specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer To bring this air of melancholy home to his reader, Hemingway introduces parallel constructions: The rain dripped from the palm trees. â⬠¦ in a long line in the rain. The nouns rain, pools, and sea belong to one semantic field ââ¬â that of water, which comes to be associated with inevitability. Indeed, one cannot hide from the rain. Water is everywhere: it is on the ground, it is pouring from the heavens as though the nature were weeping for something. Alliteration, namely the repetition of the sounds -r-and -l-(Rain dripped from the palm trees, the sea broke in a long line in the rain), brings the necessary measured rhythm into the utterance, imitates the sound of rain. In such a dull evening the American wife sees a cat in the rain, and feels a strong inexplicable desire to get it. Hemingway writes: ââ¬Å"The cat sat under the table and tried to make herself so compact that she wouldnt be dripped onâ⬠. The reader easily imagines a small, wet homeless creature, crouching under the table in the empty square. In the course of the story it turns into a symbol of loneliness for him, a parallel character to American wife: both characters are inconvenient and lonely. The girlââ¬â¢s decision to go down and get the cat ââ¬Å"makes the reader acquaintedâ⬠with her husband. He is lying on the bed, reading. First he proposes to go out for the cat his wife wants so much, but soon the reader understands: he does it out of politeness, not out of love and understanding. His answers are short and indifferent (ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll do itâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t get wetâ⬠), whereas the wife is explicit in her emotions. When the girl goes downstairs she is greeted by the hotel-keeper, who ââ¬Å"stood up and bowed to her as she passed the officeâ⬠. Her husbandââ¬â¢s attitude radically differs from the hotel-keeperââ¬â¢s attitude towards her: the verb bowed in the latterââ¬â¢s speech implies respect. As the old man seems to be more caring than the husband, she takes a liking to him. To expose this feeling of the young lady the author resorts to anaphoric repetition: She liked the deadly serious wayâ⬠¦ She liked his old, heavy face and big hands . The implicit details old heavy face and big hands point to those care and support the American wife cannot find in her husband. As the author says: The pardon made her feel very small and at the same time really important. She had a momentary feeling of being of supreme importance. Hemingway juxtaposes two epithets: small and important, and this paradoxical combination emphasizes the womanââ¬â¢s needs and feelings. She needs to be heard, to be understood, and to be important. It seems that the situation improves somehow because in the course of narration the husband ââ¬Å"getsâ⬠a name ââ¬â George, and it is him, who starts the conversation, when his wife returns to their room. He even stops reading for a while: ââ¬Å"Did you get the cat,â⬠ââ¬â he asked, putting the book downâ⬠. The verbal elements ââ¬â both the interrogative sentence and the phrase forming the gesture detail show that the husband wonders, he seems to be interested. But he doesnââ¬â¢t manage to keep this interest for too long: ââ¬Å"George was reading againâ⬠. Then comes the climax of the story. ââ¬Å"I get so tired of it,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"I get so tired of looking like a boy. â⬠The American wife is tired of her routine, she doesnââ¬â¢t say directly that she is not satisfied with her family life, but the reader can see it in the context. And this internal conflict ââ¬â the conflict between the wifeââ¬â¢s wishes and her inability to realize them ââ¬â is the main conflict of the story. She says: I want to pull my hair back tight and smooth and make a big knot at the back that I feel. I want to have a kitty to sit on my lap and purr when I stroke her. She wants to have long hair to look solid and respectable. She wants to have children and her own house, which are associated in her mind with silver and candles. And the cat in her dreams is a symbol of refuge. ââ¬Å"I want it to be spring,â⬠the girl says. She desperately needs changes, something new in her life. She needs someone to care about. To disclose the girls emotional state and to accentuate the idea of dissatisfaction the author bases upon parallelism reinforced by the repetition of the verb want (I want). Even this pronoun I makes the reader believe the American wife is lonely: heshe cannot see the pronoun we instead, for instance. The American wife feels insulted with her husbandââ¬â¢s behaviour and stays looking out of the window. It is still raining. The rain, a silent witness of this high drama, forms the leitmotif of the story. The image of rain has a symbolic meaning. It symbolizes an unfortunate family life. To the end of the story the author gratifies the girls wish and ââ¬Å"givesâ⬠her the cat, but it is not that cat from the street. And though the writer leaves it to the reader to guess a further development of the events, it seems predictable that the girl wont be satisfied, that she will never be happy with her husband. This big tortoise-shell cat does not seem to symbolize home, coziness and, as a result, happiness, it symbolizes a missed opportunity.

The Christian Tradition Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Christian Tradition - Essay Example The New Testament Christians also believe that they descended from the old Testament prophets and cannot deviate from such a believe in one true God since it worked well with their ancestors who were favored by God over other surrounding nations. There is also a belief that God will accept all who will come to believe in Him and renounce all other gods they have been worshiping (Grenz 75). Just like the Old Testament Christians, the modern Christians also believe that the Invisible God has revealed himself to us through Jesus Christ. They believe that Jesus is the messiah or the savior who is Godââ¬â¢s own son and divine in nature (Harris 40). The bible in the gospel of John chapter 3 and verse 16 refers Jesus as Godââ¬â¢s only begotten son who He gave to come and die for the forgiveness of sins of many. The New Testament Christians believe that Jesus died and resurrected to redeem us from our sins and this is for all who will believe in Him (Bible 823). Jesus is therefore the pillar of Modern Christians because their faith is totally based on Him. He is believed to be the Head of the church and the King of all creation hence Christians have to confess that Jesus is Lord to receive the salvation that comes from Him. Jesus is believed to have the divine nature in Him and He himself is God. In the gospel of John chapter 17 and verse 21, Jesus calls Himself the Son and God the Father to bring a distinction in His form. However, He declares that He the Son and God the Father are one (Bible 840). The New Testament Christians also believe that there is the indwelling spirit who guides them in their daily walk with God. Before Jesus left this world to go and be with the father, He promised to leave His disciples a helper and that is the Holy Spirit. In the gospel of John chapter 14 verses 16 and 26, Jesus declares the Holy Spirit coming from the Father and coming to represent Him in the world and
